"Green Ledges" on Little Deer Isle, Maine.

Here are pictures and information on our cottage on Little Deer Isle, Maine. You can contact Peter for more about Green Ledges. We also have a slide show of pictures of the cabin, most with explanatory captions, but this may not always work.

N.B. The picture links all open in a separate browser window, so close the pop up browser window to return to this page.

"Green Ledges" is a rustic cabin (camp) built in the early 1920's on the Eggemoggin Reach shore of Little Deer Isle between Eggemoggin and the bridge, roughly across from the former Oakland House on the mainland. The approach to the cabin was (~1958-2013) via a nice wooded path over a small brook about 100 yards or less from the old parking area. (Now you take the right spur from the road directly to Green Ledges compound.) The large front porch is less than 10 yards from the shore and overlooks Eggemoggin Reach. Many boats, sailing and power pleasure boats and working boats, pass each day; most of the schooner fleet passes every week.

The cottage is a small house with 3 bedrooms, a separate kitchen, a large dining room/living room, and a good sized front porch, which is partly under the roof and partly in the open air. There is a "bathroom" attached to the master bedroom; this bathroom contains only a bathtub. What Green Ledges has lacked in modern conveniences; i.e., electricity, telephone, indoor plumbing, hot & cold running water, and heat; it makes up by being charming, rustic, and quiet. Some of those conveniences may be added soon. You can enjoy the woods and birds from the 1922 privy, out a short path in the back. There has been rainwater on indoor taps in the kitchen and bathroom, but with a drilled well now nearby, that may change. Additional water is available at the back porch by hand pump from the well. Drinking water can be purchased, or containers may be filled from the professionally drilled well in the owner's adjacent new garage and outbuilding. Stove and refrigerator are run by bottled gas, and there have been gas lamps to supplement the old kerosene lamps. The cabin has been kept "primitive" by modern standards, which is just the way we liked it - but that may all be changing.

Green Ledges is not available for rent - it's just for family and our guests.
